Enabling IoT Solutions with Zebra’s EAI Data System Framework

Now that there are billions of connected mobile devices, sensors, and other technologies capturing and sensing event, location, GPS, and other data, the Internet of Things (IoT) has become a reality.

It’s something that many forward-thinking companies are now beginning to leverage to their benefit, by developing data-driven solutions that capture data insights from all their connected devices. They’re using those insights to drive everything from a better understanding of customer behavior to transforming the way we work by enabling smarter, more productive, and more efficient workflows.

For example, Zebra Technologies has introduced several IoT-enabled solutions, including its SmartPack Trailer for the transportation and logistics industry. SmartPack combines Zebra mobile computers, 3D sensors, cameras, software, and analytics to deliver real-time visibility into your loading processes, people, and assets.

It captures data such as trailer load density, fullness, load quality, images of loads in progress, and the number of packages scanned and loaded per hour.

This allows companies to eliminate wasted trailer space and maximize loading speed and efficiency while reducing their shipping, fuel, and labor costs.

IoT and data-driven solutions such as SmartPack have enormous potential to change the way we work for the better, across virtually any industry. However, like any other technology solution, IoT solutions must begin with a platform. This is why every industrial enterprise, depending on the industry, will have some form of IoT platform in the future.

The beauty is that these platforms will become standard tools in our enterprise environments. But they’ll need to talk to each other so we can derive value from them.

That’s where Zebra Technologies has enabled better connectivity, communication, and data collection by building an IoT and data framework called Enterprise Asset Intelligence (EAI).

Zebra’s EAI Data System Framework

Zebra’s EAI is an IoT platform that combines device and sensor data as well as Zebra and third-party software applications to capture, store, and analyze data and make it available for sharing.

With the EAI framework, you have devices on the edge of your network that sense and capture information. They’re embedded with a chipset that allows that data to be securely extracted.

Zebra’s EAI framework traces every data point back to the device on the edge of the network, tracking by location, serial number, and device version.

After you capture device data, including real-time events, you need to not only store and analyze it, but also make it available for sharing. This happens in the cloud or within your on-premise infrastructure, and you can integrate the framework with other applications and systems such as your ERP, WMS, or other platforms and software.

But you’ll also have APIs that allow applications to be built around this data framework, so they can work with event, location, GPS, and sensor data to deliver unprecedented insights into all your workflows, inventory, assets, transactions and more.

Zebra’s SmartPack Trailer is just one example of the limitless possibilities with the IoT-ready EAI framework.

Many solutions are quickly emerging and more will soon follow, as next-generation enterprise applications use this framework to bring data-driven insights into more industries and more areas of tomorrow’s enterprise. They’ll leverage contextual and location information, big data, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and real-time data flow and analytics to help companies see into any desired area of their business and convert the resulting insights into actionable change and optimization.
