It’s not just money that drives a village. It’s time and attention. In February a number of employees took time out of their work day to read with elementary students at St Paul City School. Over several hours we were each paired with a kindergartner up through a fifth grader. We coached, listened, asked questions and helped when a youngster stumbled. Some were quite skilled, others clearly didn’t want our help. We went away enjoying every minute but questioning whether we moved the needle for anyone. Yet we all understood that for one brief moment some fifty kids got the undivided attention of an adult.
